Bruce Lee Barney, 89, of Copperas Cove, Texas, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on October 4, 2026. He was born on June 1, 1937, in Gentry, Arkansas, and lived a life shaped by service, education, devotion to family, and a steady love for the people and places that mattered most to him.
Bruce graduated from Siloam Springs High School in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, in 1956. He went on to earn both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, preparing for a calling that would define much of his life. For more than 50 years, he taught history and coached football leaving his mark on generations of students and athletes at Abilene High School, Cisco Junior College, Copperas Cove High School, Ellison High School, and Salado High School. After retiring from the school system, he continued sharing his knowledge as an adjunct professor at Central Texas College. His long career reflected patience, discipline, and a lasting belief in the value of learning.
He also served his country in the United States Air Force for four years as a Morse Code operator. His service took him to Tripoli, Africa, and to Abilene, Texas, where he met Brenda Ingalsbe, who became his bride of 64 years. That meeting began a partnership that would remain central to the story of his life.
Beyond his work and military service, Bruce found joy in simple and enduring pleasures. He was an avid golfer and bird hunter, and he especially enjoyed spending time on his land. These pursuits reflected a man who appreciated the outdoors, quiet moments, and the familiar rhythms of a well-lived life.
Of all his accomplishments, Bruce was most proud of his family. He is survived by Brenda, his beloved wife of 64 years, and by his daughters, Julie (Eric) Armstrong and Karen Barney. His legacy continues in his beloved grandchildren, Tyler (Felicia) Armstrong, Zachary (Mariah) Armstrong, Christopher Armstrong, and Brynn Leigh Barney, as well as great-grandchildren, Milo, Olivia, and Liam. Bruce also held dear his family in Arkansas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Velda Barney, his brother, Emmet (Bonnie) Barney, and his sister, Anita (Charlie) Ray. He is survived by his sister, Kathy (Dick) Hudson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved. The love he gave to his family, and the pride he took in each generation, formed the heart of his life and will remain one of his most lasting legacies.
A memorial service will be held on October 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sneed Carney Funeral Home, Copperas Cove Location, 1614 S FM 116, Copperas Cove, Texas 76522, and the internment service will be held at the Killeen Veteran’s Cemetery at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 19, 2026.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Copperas Cove. Bruce always loved attending both in person and online church services there and continuing his praise by listening to hymns at home.
