David Compton, age 74, died on May 2, 2024 of Lewy Body Dementia. He was born on January 14, 1950, in Burnet, TX, David had resided in Big Spring, Austin, Lockhart, Lampasas, San Marcos, and Denver, CO.
David attended Austin's Lanier High School. He received a BA from the University of Texas Austin, and later an AD in Nursing from Austin Community College. He then earned certification in wound and ostomy care from MD Anderson Hospital in Houston.
David read and traveled extensively. He loved to "people watch", and his skills of observation of mannerisms and behaviors were remarkable. It wasn't a surprise that he was himself a talented writer.
David was a staunch and vocal supporter of animal welfare. He helped many a turtle cross the road and helped any animal (or insect) to safety if he found one in jeopardy. As he grew older, David admitted that he preferred the company of animals to that of people, and he became an unapologetic serial rescuer and adopter of over 21 cats and dogs, several of whom are mourning his absence today.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine of Austin; daughter, Lindsay Compton (husband Rick Yarbrough) of Bend, Oregon; niece, Atesha Compton of Salem, Virginia; nephews, Chris Compton of Leander, TX, and William Lansford of Jonesboro, TX. David was preceded in death by his father, Tommy Joe (TJ) Compton; his mother, Maxine Compton; stepmother, Dorothy Compton; brother, Robert Compton; sister, Suzanne Compton Lansford and his nieces, Leanne Compton and Jennifer Compton.
No services are planned. Donations in David's memory may be made to one of his favorite charities: St. Judes Hospital or the ASPCA. Or please consider donating to organizations that fund dementia research, education, and support, such as Alzheimer's Association or Lewy Body Association.
