HM "Sonny" Boswell

HM “Sonny” Boswell of San Saba died September 4, 2020 at Scott and White Hospital in Temple. He was 90 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents and only sister, Charlene Huffstetler. Sonny was born October 9, 1929 to Charlie and Bonnie Bell Boswell in Tahoka, Texas. He served with the Army’s 32nd Infantry Division in Panama prior to returning to San Saba and operating a store and the Sinclair Service Station in downtown San Saba. In 1964, he began a 24-year career with the Texas Highway Department highlighted with receiving the Extra Mile Award for rescuing and saving a life during a flood. Sonny retired from the Highway Department as its San Saba Maintenance Foreman in 1988. He also developed and operated Boswell’s Trailer and RV Park in addition to farming and ranching throughout his life. Sonny married Estelle Gray in 1951 and they raised four children during their 40 years of marriage. She preceded him in death. Sonny married Wanda Dawson in 1991 and their 29 yearlong marriage was focused on helping raise their grandchildren. Sonny served the community for 39 years as a Mason and worshiped the Lord as a member of the First Baptist Church for over 20 years. Sonny was the Patriarch of his family. He provided family leadership through personal examples of hard work, sacrifice, high moral standards, and leadership through example. He emphasized the best in each family member. He provided a steady hand, support, and place of refuge during their many storms of life. Sonny was a private person remembered for the love of his family, an outstretched hand of friendship to all and a broad smile beneath his Stetson Hat. Sonny is survived by his loving wife Wanda, children Pam and Harold Yates; Roy and Peggy Boswell; Elvis Boswell and Adriane Shahan; HM Jr., and Mary Boswell; plus 18 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Services will be held at the San Saba First Baptist Church on September 8th at 2:00 p.m. followed by a private graveside service at the family plot in the San Saba City Cemetery. The family requests donations to his favorite charity, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, in lieu of flowers.
