Obituary

Jackie Leon Hyman Sr., a devoted family man and pillar of his community, passed away March 25, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and adventure.

Born on May 25, 1937, in Burnet, Texas, to James Lowell and Clara Hinds Hyman, Jackie's roots ran deep in the Lone Star State. His family's ranch, which once sprawled across what is now Fort Hood, was a testament to his enduring connection to the land. When the government purchased the property in 1952, the family relocated to Kempner, where Jackie would build a life filled with music, cattle, and community.

A talented singer, Jackie once won a contest that brought him offers to pursue a career in music, but his loyalty to his family kept him grounded. He married his sweetheart, Mary G. Jarma, on November 5, 1958, while serving in the Air Force, and went on to become a respected cattleman and member of the Cattlemen Association.

Jackie's greatest joy was his family. He cherished memories of swimming and roasting marshmallows at the river, and exploring the country with his loved ones. His love for BBQ and whittling sticks for roasting marshmallows was matched only by his love for his family. Whether he was working as a Civil Service Employee at Fort Hood or enjoying picnics on "the hill" where his family's old homestead once stood, Jackie's warmth and generosity endeared him to all who knew him.

When asked what country he was from at the Canada border, Jackie's response was simple: "Texas."

Jackie is survived by his wife, Mary, of Kempner, Texas; a sister, Dean Bowers of Temple; a son, Jackie Hyman Jr. and wife Heather; five daughters, Karen and husband Darold Roads of Wichita, Kansas, Lana Brackett, Deanna and husband Ross Zimmerle, Traci and Rusty Rickles, and Mary Reavis, all of Kempner, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Lowell and Clara Hinds Hyman; a brother, James Lowell Hyman Jr.; a sister, Lillian Lucille Burrier, a grandson, Damian Giles Hyman; a granddaughter, Holly Rashelle Shirley; a great-granddaughter, Vana Marie Redd; and a son-in-law, Michael Wayne Brackett Sr.

The family is especially proud of Jackie's daughter, Traci Hyman, who founded Voice For Animals Rescue and Sanctuary, a nonprofit animal rescue organization in Kempner, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to this beloved cause. A celebration of Jackie's life will be held at a later date.
