James Braden Charles, a remarkable young man whose spirit and light touched so many lives, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025, at McLane's Children's Hospital, at the tender age of 22. Born on February 4, 2003, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Braden’s journey on this earth was a testament to his incredible strength and resilience in the face of tremendous challenges. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm, Thursday, December 11, 2025, Grace United Methodist Church in Copperas Cove. Burial will follow at Kempner Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5:00 - 7:00 pm, Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Sneed Carnley Funeral Chapel in Copperas Cove.

From an early age, Braden exhibited a passion for helping others. He volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club starting at just 11 years old and began working there at 15, even as he faced the daunting diagnosis of Osteosarcoma. His heart for service did not stop there; during periods of remission, he joyfully became a Volunteer Firefighter for the Kempner Volunteer Fire Department. His dedication to both community service and education was evident; Braden graduated high school in 2023 while bravely battling cancer for over five years and embarked on EMT school, driven by his desire to assist those in need. Braden was the star of the show, of course, when helping work at the family-owned auction house. He enjoyed ringing, getting everyone laughing and paying attention.  He loved being a part of the family business.

Braden’s wisdom and kindness resonated with everyone who knew him. Braden was faith filled and the kindest soul, he possessed an old-soul quality that made the world feel brighter. One of his brothers remarked, “His smile and laugh will light up a room.” Braden’s profound ability to connect with people transcended his youth, earning him respect and admiration wherever he went. He was not just a fighter; he became a hero, embodying grace, perseverance, hope, and strength throughout his illness.

Among his proudest accomplishments was his involvement with the Teen Advisory Board for McLane's Children's Hospital, where he played an vital role in supporting other teenagers facing similar battles. He even created a discord channel specially designed for teens fighting cancer, further highlighting his commitment to foster community and connection. Recently, Braden received an honorary Lifetime Membership Award from Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Texas. Recognized for his empathy in the 8th grade, Braden’s greatest achievement extended far beyond accolades; it was in his profound ability to make others feel loved and cared for.

Braden had a variety of interests that showcased his adventurous spirit. He was a certified HAM Radio Operator and dedicated weather spotter, revealing a fascination with both technology and the natural world. He enjoyed flying drones, photography, and spending time with friends, cooking out, fishing, boating, and even playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, flight and truck simulators, and Minecraft. Braden loved his music including playing guitars and playing Tuba in the yearly Tuba Christmas at the mall. He cherished moments during cruises and appreciated the beauty of storms, often sharing his knowledge with others.

Braden was surrounded by the warmth of family and love until the end. He is survived by his devoted mother, Randa Charles, and his father, Matt Charles. He leaves behind beloved brothers Christian Charles, Caleb McGuire, and Alvone Crawford, along with sister Rowan Wilkerson and sister-in-law Carson Davis. He was the cherished uncle to Nevaeh and Casen Charles and was loved deeply by his grandparents, Jon and Francie Charles. His aunts and uncles, Jennifer and Jimbo Wallace, as well as Brandon and Wendy Notz, and cousins Austin and Hunter Wallace, Bryce and Kaycee Notz, all held a special place in his heart. Braden's girlfriend, Isabelle Avilla, brought him joy and companionship, and his many friends enriched his life with love. He is preceded in death by his grandparents Johnny and Jenny Notz.

The legacy Braden leaves behind is profound. He was respected, adored, and will never be forgotten. Those who had the privilege of knowing him came to witness not just his fight against illness, but his unyielding spirit—a spirit that shone brightly and affected communities far beyond his own. The impact of James Braden Charles will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
