Scotty Underwood

James Scott Underwood, lovingly known to many as Scotty Underwood, was born on July 13, 1954, in Burnet, Texas. On July 23, 2026 he passed from this world, leaving behind a legacy woven deeply into the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.

Services will be held at Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel in Lampasas on Tuesday, July 28, at 2 pm with visitation an hour prior.  Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. 

From a young age, Scotty embodied the honesty, hard work, and loyalty that would come to define his life. He believed in family above all else, pouring boundless energy and affection into those he cherished most. 

Scotty was a devoted husband to Patty Underwood for 37 years. He was a proud father to Beth Oestreich (Reece), Lorri Underwood, and Vonzella Hammons (BF). To them, and to his grandchildren—Taylor Wilkins (Morris), Riley Oestreich, Nathaniel Schoepf, Addison Hammons, and Scotty Hammons—he was more than a dad and Pawpaw; he was a guiding light, a steady hand, and a wealth of wisdom. He also had two great-grandchildren, Ryder and Ainsley Wilkins, who loved coming to see their "G-Paw". He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren by heart, Annabelle Turner and Cameron Brack. Other survivors include his older brother Steven Underwood and nephew Jamey Underwood (Ashley). 

Scotty’s career stands as a testament to his character. For 45 years, he faithfully served as a superintendent for the McCarty Corporation. He was a man to depend on, and the person people turned to when something needed fixing or building—if it required a steady hand and a sharp mind, Scotty was the man to call. Upon retiring, he brought a lifelong dream to reality by owning and operating Hilltop Gun Shop for 12 wonderful years. The shop grew into a cherished community gathering place, where friends and new acquaintances alike would find themselves at ease, drawn in by Scotty’s captivating stories and humor. Many who first arrived as customers left as close lifelong friends.

A true outdoorsman, Scotty’s soul was never more alive than when surrounded by nature. He was a passionate hunter, often recounting tales of his travels across the country in pursuit of adventure. Of all his hunting memories, some of the most treasured were spent with his friends, sons-in-law, and grandson hunting in West Texas. Scotty had a gift of building and craftsmanship. From taxidermy to recurve bows, knives, and countless other treasures, his skill and creativity knew few limits.

Scotty will be remembered as a man of remarkable integrity—someone who always put his family first, and who built the life he loved through determination and pride. The respect and admiration others had for him was woven deeply into the fabric of the people he touched. Scotty was not just a leader but a loyal and steadfast friend, the kind of man who made those around him feel valued and heard.

Preceding him in death were his beloved father, James Underwood; his mother, Vonzella Underwood; his sister, Melinda Burke; and his step-son, Lawrence Allbee. Their memories together live on in stories shared, in the lessons passed down, and in the legacy Scotty helped nurture every day of his life.

Scotty Underwood’s life was a gift—one that will never be forgotten, and one that will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
