James O. Ward Jr.

James O. Ward Jr., of Kempner, Texas, passed away on September 9, 2026, at the age of 84. He was born on July 31, 1942, in Horatio, Arkansas.

James lived a life marked by service and quiet pleasures. He devoted more than 22 years to the United States Navy, serving as an Aviation Maintenance Administrationman, Chief. His years in the Navy reflected dedication, discipline, and a steady commitment to service of his country. Beyond his military career, he found enjoyment in reading books, a pastime that brought him both comfort and inspiration through the years.

Among the blessings of his life, becoming a Christian in the final months proved one of his proudest moments, along with the forgiveness that comes with it.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Owen and Tillie Ward and Bernice and Gale Mayo, and son-in-law, Joe Powell.

James is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janet Ward, who shared in his life and memories and now carries his love forward. Son, James O. Ward III and wife, Donna, and their children, Preston and Ethan Ward; daughter, Paula Powell and husband, Jimmy Williamson, their children, Wyatt (Turtle) Powell and wife, Demi, Travis Powell and wife, Julia and their son Oliver, Megan Deats and husband Brad, their daughters, Lynlee, Landree and Emeri, Blake Williamson, Jody and Jalynn Powell and their children, Jorden and Jazmynn, James and Kara Powell and their children, Jacob, Lincoln and Evelyn, Josh and Mery Powell their sons, Calvin and Cayden; son, John S. Ward and wife, Tanja, their children, Taylor Ward, Bailey Horner and husband, Trent, Morgan Irby and husband, Andrew, Madeline and Jackson Ward; two great-grandchildren on the way; and a sister, Betty Brown of Virginia.

A graveside service will be held on November 23, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery 11463 TX-195, Killeen, Texas 76542.

James O. Ward Jr. will be remembered with love for his years of service, for the faith that shaped his final months, and for the quiet, thoughtful spirit he brought to those around him. May his memory bring comfort and peace to all who knew him.
