John Robert Bumpus, 79, passed away on July 2, 2024. Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at First Baptist Church Lampasas from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with interment at Oak Hill Cemetery Dr. Mark Bumpus, brother of John Robert, will officiate.
John Robert was born on November 27, 1944, to John Sylvan Bumpus and Norma "Brownie" Nichols Bumpus in Longview, Texas. The family moved to Lampasas from Odessa in 1951. He graduated from Lampasas High School in 1963 where he excelled in basketball and baseball. Upon graduating high school, John Robert was awarded an athletic scholarship from the University of Houston to play baseball as a second baseman from 1963-1966. He later finished his college education at Southwest Texas University in San Marcos, graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Education.
John Robert's enthusiasm for sports led him to coach spending time in Weslaco, Pettus, and Alvin. John Robert returned to Lampasas in 1976 where he began a long and successful business career. He would begin working for the Paine Insurance Agency which he would later purchase and become Goodwin-Bumpus Insurance. He worked as a loan officer with Lampasas Federal Savings & Loan Association which he would later advance to President. During his time working with the Savings & Loan, he began his career as a real estate appraiser and formed his own company as an independent appraiser for almost 40 years before his retirement in 2019. While living and working in Lampasas, John Robert was active within the community by serving 2 years on the city council, LISD school board trustee for 12 years, as well as sitting on the board of directors of First National Bank. He was also a member of First Baptist Church, Lampasas.
John Robert's passion for sports, mainly basketball was unwavering. A passion he would pass on to his children and grandchildren. Prior to his illness, he could always be found at the Badger basketball games sitting mid-court opposite of the player's bench fondly known to all as "his seat".
John Robert was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Miller Bumpus. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jane Munn Bumpus; three sons, Rob Bumpus of Georgetown, Rex Bumpus of Lampasas, Ron Bumpus (Jaci) of Lampasas; six grandchildren, Kord Bumpus, Kase Bumpus, Wren Bumpus, Pryce Bumpus, Mason Steele, and McKane Steele; two brothers, Ronny Bumpus (Sue Ellen) of Lampasas, Mark Bumpus (Earl Ann) of Belton and several nieces and nephews.
