John E. Gregory, age 73, of Copperas Cove, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2021, in Killeen. Funeral Services will be held at Noon on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at Victory Baptist Church, 502 W. Business 190, Copperas Cove, TX 76522. Burial will follow at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors in Killeen. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM, Monday, June 21, 2021, at Viss Family Funeral Home, 1614 S. FM 116, Copperas Cove, TX 76522.
John was born on September 22, 1947, to the late Elza and Lucille Chaney Gregory in Baton Rouge, LA. His family moved to Ada, Oklahoma while he was in Jr. High and he graduated from Ada High School in 1966. In his teenage years, John was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Ada. He met June Hunter while they were both in the 10th grade at church. They married on June 21, 1968, just a few days before John received his letter to be drafted into the United States Army. John served for 22 years in the Army retiring at the rank of SFC. He received many awards and commendations to include the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 bronze stars, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal. After his retirement, John worked on Fort Hood with Mantech until retiring in 2014. John was an active member of Victory Baptist Church in Copperas Cove where he served as a deacon for over 30 years, and would often cook BBQ for the church. In his spare time, John also loved to play golf.
John leaves behind a legacy of generosity, which he would seldom take credit for.
John was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Robert Gregory and Patrick Gregory.
John is survived by his wife, June Gregory; daughter, Teresa Gregory; sister, Connie Roth and husband, Phil; and several nieces and nephews.
