Lou Nell Harkey

Lou Nell Harkey, affectionately known as Aunt Nell, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, in Waco, Texas, at the age of 91. Born on September 11, 1933, in San Saba, Texas, she dedicated much of her life to the noble profession of nursing.

For 38 years, Aunt Nell served as a NICU Nurse at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, where her compassion and dedication were instrumental in the lives of countless newborns and their families. Through her hard work, she attained the role of head of the NICU Unit, a testament to her commitment to excellence and care in her field. Her journey in nursing was marked by a profound sense of purpose, and she was proud to be an alumnus of Baylor University.

In addition to her remarkable career, Aunt Nell was known for her vibrant spirit and love for life. She enjoyed traveling with friends, RV’ing, and savoring good food. A true animal lover, she brought joy both to her furry companions and to those around her. While residing at Stillwell Retirement Residence, she embraced the community, helping fellow residents run errands and enjoying shopping trips together.

Aunt Nell's legacy will be forever cherished by her family and numerous friends. She is survived by her beloved nieces Debbie Blakley and Connie Hartmann, along with her great-nephew Randy Thorp and his wife Joni, and great-nephew Evan Blakley and his wife Sarah. She also leaves behind great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces: Isiah Thorp, Chloe Thorp, Randon Thorp, Maya Kriegel, and Everett Blakley. Aunt Nell held a special bond with her friends Glenda Kroll and her husband Raymond, who were an important part of her life.

She was preceded in death by her brother Tommy Harkey and sister-in-law Vernette Harkey, who undoubtedly welcomed her with open arms.

A graveside service to honor her life will be held at Cherokee Cemetery in Cherokee, Texas, on August 17, 2025, beginning at 2:00 PM.

Lou Nell Harkey's warmth, compassion, and unyielding spirit will remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her.
