Lynn Calvin Cox

Lynn Calvin Cox, age 90, passed peacefully on September 6, 2026. After a life well lived, surrounded by the love of his family, Lynn made it known to those around him that he was “ready to go home.”

Lynn was born on October 26, 1935, in a farmhouse in Cross Plains, Texas, the youngest son of John Calvin and Florence Evelyn Smith Cox. From those humble beginnings grew a man known for his remarkable tenacity, strong work ethic, and unwavering devotion to his family.

On August 11, 1955, Lynn married the love of his life, Kay LaMoine Allen, in Canton, Mississippi. Together, they built a life centered on family, education, faith, and service. They were blessed with two sons, Jimmy Lynn Cox and Bruce Calvin Cox.

During the early years of their marriage, Lynn worked on the pipeline. He later worked as a fireman while Kay completed her degree. When Kay began her teaching career, Lynn returned to school and earned his degree in education. Before long, he joined Kay in the classroom and on the field as a teacher and coach.

It was as a coach that Lynn touched countless lives. Lovingly known as “Coach Cox,” he was more than a coach to many of his students and athletes. He was a mentor, encourager, teacher, and someone who believed in hard work and never giving up. His tenacity and determination became a part of who he was, both in his profession and in his everyday life.

To his family, however, he was simply “Daddy Lynn.” He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather whose greatest legacy was the family he loved so deeply. His presence, strength, stories, and steadfast love will be carried forward by the generations who were fortunate enough to call him theirs.

Lynn is survived by his two sons, Jimmy Cox and wife, Karol, of Troy; and Bruce Cox and wife, Yvonne, of Killeen. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Bruce Cox, Jr.; Rachel Richardson and husband, Andrew; Kayla Jones and husband, Mark; Kayci Bales and husband, Joel; and Rylan Cox.

His great-grandchildren are Ethen Scruggs and wife, Lindsey; Bode Cox; Atleigh Traw and husband, Brandon; Lexee Marez; Megan Richardson; Zenlie Richardson; Lachlyn Richardson; Kobe Jones; Dylan Jones; Ryker Morua; Raider Morua; Jax Jones; Jentry Jones; Royce Kramer; Bear Bales; and Brayde Bales. He also leaves behind his great-great-grandchildren, Sage Bratcher and Salem Bratcher.

Lynn is also survived by his nephew, Chris Craig and wife, Konnie; great-niece, Caitlyn Craig; and sister-in-law, Jackie Craig, who were all a cherished part of his extended family.

For 15 years, Lynn carried on without his beloved Kay, lovingly known to the family as “Gannie.” Their love story began in 1955 and endured through a lifetime of memories, family, and devotion. Now, after those 15 years apart, Lynn has finally been reunited with his beloved Kay. Perhaps that is what he meant when he said he was “ready to go home”—ready to go home to the Lord and to the woman he loved so dearly.

Lynn’s life was defined by perseverance, hard work, love, and an enduring commitment to those around him. He spent his life teaching, coaching, providing for his family, and leaving an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Though he will be deeply missed, his family can take comfort in knowing that Lynn was ready for his journey home. The lessons he taught, the lives he touched, and the love he gave will remain long after his passing. And somewhere beyond this life, a husband and wife who spent so many years loving one another are together again.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorials be made in Lynn’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
