Nancy Ellen Slagle

June 6, 1936 — November 13, 2025

Lometa

Nancy Ellen Pickett Slagle went to be with the Lord on November 13, 2025, at the age of 89, after a brief illness.  She was born to William F. and Ruby Lee Queen Pickett on June 6, 1936, in Lometa, Texas.  Nancy was proud of the fact that she lived the majority of her life in the little house that she was born and raised in.  She married Pete Slagle in 1952 and together they had four children who were also raised in Lometa, Texas on the Pickett homestead.  Nancy was a faithful Christian of the Lometa Church of Christ for over 65 years.  She taught Sunday School and enjoyed participating in every event that the church sponsored.  She worked for the Lometa School District for 35 years as a cook and manager in the school cafeteria.  She was famous for serving home cooked meals every day for the school children and everyone especially looked forward to her homemade rolls and cobblers.

Nancy taught all four of her children how to cook and sew.  Hard work and Christianity were the themes of her life, and she passed this ethic down to her children and grandchildren.  She was proud of the fact that her children and grandchildren learned to be resourceful, resilient, and reliable under her direction.

She loved to study and read the Bible.  The Bible was the most important book in her life, and she worked hard at being a good steward of God's word.  Nancy read the Bible to her children every evening, and she taught them to memorize verses, and how to read the word of God.  She also taught her children the importance of giving back to the church and community.  She lived by Philippians 4:13 and instilled in her kids the importance of living by the Bible verse as well: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Paul Gordon Slagle, her granddaughter, Shanna Shinelle Adams Drinkard, her brother and his wife Freeman Lee Pickett and Barbara, her brother, Olen Eugene Pickett, four half-sisters and five half-brothers, two sons-in-law, Joe Trampota and Tom Dozer.

Nancy was also the Historian for the Pickett and Queen families.  She had a gift of being able to name dates and the names of her ancestors from over one hundred years ago.  She loved to study Genealogy and knew the rich history of the Lometa community.  We will all miss her stories, reciting events of past generations.

Nancy is survived by her son, Tom Slagle (Kristi), and two daughters, Marcia Slagle Dozier, and Judy Trampota.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Stephanie West (Brent), Wade Slagle (Lacy), Scott Slagle (Amy), Jonathan Adams (Astrid), William Blake Phillips (Susan), Breana Johnson (Jeremy), Christian Dozier (Michelle), Michael Dozier (Emily), Andy Dozier, and Yensi Dozier.  She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Braden Andrews, Brant, Ryder and Brittyn Slagle, Megan and Molly Adams, McKenzie and Layton Phillips, Ashley Parkinson, Aspen Slagle, Rowdy and Brodie Slagle and Cash and Weston Johnson.  She is also survived by a host of cousins and extended family members who loved her dearly.

Family visitation will be held at Lometa Church of Christ on Monday, November 17, 2025, at 10:00 AM, with a Celebration of Life to follow at 11:00 AM.  Burial will follow at Senterfitt Cemetery in Lometa, Texas.
