Robert Perry Nichols, fondly known as Nick to those who knew and loved him, passed away on May 20, 2026, in Copperas Cove, TX, leaving behind a legacy defined by kindness, humor, and an indomitable spirit. Born on June 15, 1954, in Putnam, CT, Nick’s journey through life was one marked by service, dedication, and boundless compassion.
A proud graduate of Wildwood High School in 1972, Nick embarked on a path of military service that spoke volumes of his commitment and courage. He served honorably, dedicating four years to the Marines and five years to the Army, earning several commendations along the way before his honorable discharge in 1983. His military career was only a chapter in a life filled with remarkable achievements and heartfelt connections.
Nick’s professional life was rooted in tangible skills and a desire to help others. Working in HVAC services for several years, he was known for his ability to fix things that often eluded others, a testament to his resourcefulness and willingness to lend a helping hand. Beyond his work, Nick’s proudest accomplishments were not only measured in repairs or service medals but also in the warmth he extended to everyone around him.
He was a man full of life, whose personality was as inviting as it was unique. Nick was kind and welcoming, with an ever-ready joke to brighten any room. Those around him knew that nobody was ever a stranger in his presence, as he carried himself with a rare, easy-going grace and an expansive heart. He cherished singing and reminiscing, finding joy and connection through music and shared memories. His love for hunting and the outdoors was more than a hobby—it was a thread woven deeply into the fabric of his life, bonding him to family and friends through countless adventures on the ranch and in the fields. Many fondly recall shooting three deer with one shot, a feat that added to his local legend and pride.
Nick leaves behind a beloved family that was central to his world. He is survived by his devoted wife, Michelle Nichols; his children Robert Nichols, Jr. and wife LaDonna, Emmaline Nichols Lopez, and husband, Juan, David Nichols and wife Tabitha, Joshua Nichols and wife Rebecca, and Sabrina McCray. His siblings Kenneth Nichols and wife Linda, Linda Carlson, Margie Landing and husband Terry, Matthew Thompson, and Jeffery Thompson and wife Glenda also carry forward his memory, along with several step-brothers and sisters who shared in his journey.
He is preceded in death by his loving parents William Nichols and Flora Smith; his grandparents Bill Nichols and Estelle Nichols; great-grandparents Lela Shy and Ernest Shy; as well as O.W. Perry and Flora Perry, his other beloved grandparents.
Reflecting on Nick’s life brings to mind moments of quiet strength and joyous camaraderie—hunting expeditions in the crisp morning air, evenings filled with music and laughter, and heartfelt conversations that made all who knew him feel seen and valued. His independent spirit was matched by his deep compassion, and his presence brought light and warmth to the lives he touched.
Robert Perry Nichols was a one-of-a-kind soul whose legacy of kindness, courage, and love will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. While his voice may now have grown silent, the echoes of his jokes, songs, and stories will forever resonate in the hearts of family and friends. He truly was a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left behind a trail of beautiful memories that time will never dim.
