James L. Hargrove

James (Jim) Lawrence “Red” Hargrove, 72, of Lampasas, Tx, passed away on Aug. 17, from complications associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. Jim was born in Sparks, TX on February 21, 1945 to Alfred Wayne and Annie Brown Hargrove. He graduated from Academy High School in 1963 and continued his education to receive a bachelor’s degree from Howard Payne University in 1967. Upon graduation he married Adrienne Juanell Potts and was drafted into the NFL by the Minnesota Vikings. He played for the Vikings from 1967-1970 including Super Bowl IV until he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals where he played from 1970-1972. Jim also served his country during these years in the Army National Reserve. Later, Jim was inducted into the Howard Payne University Sports Hall of Fame . Jim worked as a business owner in various fields to include furniture retail, insurance, and real estate. He was a loving and loyal husband, father and friend with a boisterous, infectious laugh. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, camping, water and snow skiing and Ranch work. He was also a member of Grace Fellowship Church in Lampasas. Jim is survived by his wife, Cherry of Lampasas, two daughters, Tonya Cockburn and husband, Jeff Cockburn of Lampasas, and Shelly Hargrove of Austin; his step-children, Cathy McBride and husband, Terry McBride of Franklin, TN and Jason Cockburn and wife, Meredith Cockburn of Dallas; two brothers Freddy Hargrove of Angleton and Gary Hargrove of Temple; and two sisters, Peggy Lawhorn of Temple and Anita Driver of Moody. Jim is also survived by his grandchildren, Cullen, Cohen and Conley Cockburn of Lampasas; step grandchildren, Beth Ann Mullins and husband,Mitchell Mullins of Franklin, TN, Stella and Lilly McBride of Franklin, TN and Dominick and Vaden Cockburn of Dallas along with four step-great grandchildren, Claudia, Hanah, Mac and Bruce of Franklin, TN and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and older brother, Kenneth Wayne Hargrove. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Alzheimer’s Research or a charity of your choice. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on August 26, 2017 at Grace Fellowship Church, Lampasas, TX. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas .Visitation and meal will be held following the burial service at Grace Fellowship Church. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Sneed Funeral Chapel and flower arrangements are being handled by Petal Peddler Florist & Gifts in Lampasas.
